Water vs. Windshield Wiper Fluid: Are They Interchangeable?

If someone has told you that water can be used instead of windshield wiper fluid, you may want to do some research before using water yourself. You will probably end up reconsidering your views about substituting windshield wiper fluid. Using water instead of wiper fluid may do more damage than you think.

Windshield wiper fluid is designed to be used to clean your windshield, so why would you want to use anything else? Water will not do a good job of cleaning the windshield because it lacks the detergents and solvents that windshield wiper fluid has. Water also freezes when it gets too cold, so you can imagine how that may not be good for the inside of your vehicle.
